On September 18, 2016, 19 year old Gabriel Anne “Abby” Gabaton, 3 BS Management Engineering and double major in AB Economics-Honors student, was diagnosed with End Stage Renal Disease, a Stage 5 Kidney disease. The only remedy the nephrologist recommended is a kidney transplant. At that time, she was prescribed a 4-hour hemodialysis, three times a week to avoid dangerous toxin build up that may create fatal complications.
Gabrielle Anne “Abby” U. Gabaton is currently in her 3rd year of college in Ateneo De Manila University. She is a Merit Scholarship awardee (top 40 of ACET takers) and a consistent Dean’s Lister (First Honors), which earned her a full scholarship grant.
Her father posted on GoFundMe, a social fundraising platform, about Abby’s health. This news reached her friends and was shared on social media. This eventually reached the ears of the Order of the Blue Eagle committee of the Ateneo Alumni Association.
OBE donated a total of Php 40,000 to Abby and her parents.
Abby was released from confinement and was able to make it for her finals but she still has to undergo regular dialysis. Abby’s father volunteered to be her kidney living donor. However, her family couldn’t afford the medical fees. The transplant costs Php 1.5M and post-transplant medications costs Php 500,000.
