Istorya ng Pag-Asa: Changing the Conversation

On September 13, 2017 at the 5th floor of the Rizal Library in the Ateneo de Manila University, Istorya ng Pag-asa, an initiative by the Office of the Vice President was launched. A partnership was created between the aforementioned, the Ateneo de Manila University and the Ateneo Alumni Association.

Istorya ng Pag-asa aims to direct social conversations away from animosity and towards positivity by spreading stories of hope featuring ordinary Filipinos with extraordinary experiences.

“Today we need to remind ourselves again that not everything that grows are weeds. There is a good seed,” said Fr. Jose Ramon T. Villarin, SJ. He reminded everyone of the importance of self-awareness and believing in the good rather than the bad. “I think we [also] need to bring forth the smile that we starting to lose if we keep on believing in ghosts and dark forces and so we welcome this initiative, this Istorya ng Pag-asa”.

The event was graced by the Vice President of the Philippines, Leni Robredo. In her speech, she shared the sentiment of Fr. Jett in “changing the conversation and swimming against the tide of enmity”. Rather than feeding on the negativity that circles in different forms of media, Istorya ng Pag-asa aims to feed hope.

“Hope is a powerful thing,” said Robredo. “It is what gives life to love, faith and peace. It lives intimately with other values of the Filipino family; courage, grit and determination, pride in one’s work and pride in a life simply lived.”

The Istorya ng Pag-asa exhibit, a photo gallery of ordinary people with stories of hope and positivity, is open for everyone. With the partnership established today, more stories coming from the Ateneo community will be featured in future exhibits. The photo gallery will be up until the end of September.
