OBE Scholar Represented the Philippines in Cambridge Debate Championship
Ateneo Debaters Matti Tan, Julia Ocoma, Luigi Alcañeses and Hans Gonzales
Order of the Blue Eagles scholar and Ateneo debater Julia Ocama along with Matti Tan Luigi Alcañeses, and Hans Gonzalez represented Philippines and Asia in the Cambridge Schools Debate Championship.
The two Ateneo teams were the only teams from Asia that reached the final break rounds of the entire international tournament, with Julia & Matti coming in as 6th and Hans & Luigi coming in as 9th.
The team of Julia & Matti competed in the Grand Finals of the Cambridge Championship against powerhouses Team Canada, Dulwich School of the UK (featuring the Captain of Team England’s 2016 World Champion Team), and Eton College–winners of multiple prestigious tournaments in Europe. Matti & Julia were runners up to Team Canada after it all. But more importantly, they spoke in the same Cambridge Union Chamber where world leaders, celebrities, religious leaders, and many other influential figures have spoken before hundreds of people.
Since September 2016, 600 teams and 1200 debaters from all over the world have competed in regional heats to qualify for the fifty slots given to competitors in Finals Day in the Cambridge Union.
Matti was the youngest competitor in the competition, while Julia was the only lady debater in the final.
